How It All Begin – Medina El Ikhsan

Hi Striders, my name is Medi, 22 years old and live in Bandung. I’m taking over SnR for now.
There was a time when I think that motorcycle is merely a daily routine transport, and to travel with it is a burden. But cars –with all of the facility it provides: the space for luggage and rest– is a hobby thing since I love roadtrips.

It all started when I and my twin, Mecca were told to maintain our fathers ’88 Daihatsu Taft. Since both of us were totally have no clue about automotive, we decided to join a community of that specific car where we met Gunandi Nanan for the first time.

2 years joining the community, we experienced camping and touring as a routine. But just like any hobby group out there, there are times when the numbers of active members are decreasing. Those outdoor activity we done together are becoming a rare event. One day Gunandi persuade us without involving the group to go out and camping. And finally that’s how we hold until now.

Time rolled and we still hang out together. One day our cars were coincidentally need an overhaul in a same time, but the urge to go out is high. Suddenly comes to our mind, “why don’t we just ride our motorcycle”? Well, as I told earlier, we were car guys (and still do, actually). We wonder: what will happen if we bring our bikes a little further than usual? how to enjoy this thing? what’s the threat if we do? And the curiosity started to sprout.

We marked our calendar to Ride to Garut through the southern route. Many other guys in our circle are tempted to come with us at first. Not surprised, they’re all gone on D-1. So we continued our plan, but this time we chose to ride to Ranca Buaya beach.

D-day, at 6.30 me and Mecca headed up to the meeting point at Banjaran.

Dulu saya pernah beranggapan kalau motor itu fungsinya sebagai pendukung rutinitas sehari-hari saja, dan touring dengan motor itu ribet. Sedangkan mobil, dengan kemudahannya: bisa membawa banyak barang dan memungkinkan untuk beristirahat di dalamnya. Saya anggap mobil sebagai wahana penyalur hobi, karena saya menyukai perjalanan ke luar kota.

Ini berawal saat saya, Medi dan kembaran saya, Mecca diserahi amanat dari Babeh untuk melanjutkan mengurus sebuah Daihatsu Taft keluaran tahun 88. Karena minimnya pengetahuan akan mengurus mobil, kami putuskan bergabung dengan salah satu komunitas, dimana saya berkenalan dengan Gunandi Nanan.

Selama 2 tahun bergabung dengan komunitas tersebut, camping dan touring menjadi agenda rutin, namun seperti yang hampir selalu dialami setiap komunitas, keaktifan anggota ngga selalu sesuai harapan. Semakin lama semakin sulit buat ngajak banyak orang camping dan touring kaya biasanya. Sampai satu waktu, diluar acara komunitas, Gunandi mengajak saya dan Mecca berkemah bertiga. And finally, that’s how we roll. Bertiga selalu.

Waktu bergulir, kami masih main bareng sampai tiba masanya mobil kami bertiga kebetulan bersamaan harus mendapatkan peremajaan mesin, tapi kami pengen main. Akhirnya terpikir kenapa ngga motoran aja? Kaya saya bilang di atas, we were car guys (and still do, actually). Bisa kaya gimana sih benda ini kalo dipake agak jauh? Gimana cara mainnya? Apa kendalanya? segala penasaran mulai muncul.

Kami tandai tanggal merah di kalender. Pada awalnya banyak teman lain di tongkrongan yang berminat ikut rencana perjalanan kami ke Garut via jalur selatan. Sehari menjelang hari H, seperti biasanya, yang pasti hanya kami bertiga. Maka kami tetap berangkat namun dengan plan B, menuju pantai Ranca Buaya.

Sabtu pagi pukul 06:30 saya dan Mecca berangkat ke titik kumpul di Banjaran.

Our trip started wet for awhile, but we’re prepared. We pulled over at Cukul tea plantation just to take off the raincoat and have some picture.

Perjalanan diawali dengan basah, tapi kami sudah siap. Ketika hujan mereda, kami berhenti sejenak di Cukul, sekedar melepas jas hujan dan berfoto.

Gunandi dengan Nella Kharisma-nya menjadi leader dalam perjalanan, diikuti vario 150 milik Mecca dan saya dengan Aerox 155.

The trip from Cukul spend 3 hours, include one time rest. On mid day, we arrived at Ranca Buaya.

Total waktu perjalanan dari Cukul menghabiskan 3 jam sudah termasuk istirahat sekali. Tengah hari kami touch down Ranca Buaya.

If you wonder why changed our destination to Ranca Buaya, it’s because this 2 reasons: first, the sour and spicy sauced squid. And the second? Crispy fried squid.

All those fuel and fatigue just for those.

Kalau kalian tanya mengapa kami ubah jalur ke Ranca Buaya, alasannya hanya dua: yang pertama adalah cumi-cumi saus asam pedas. Yang kedua? Cumi krispi.

Iya, itu aja. Semua bensin dan pegel ini demi itu.

But combined with the sea breeze under the hut, felt like mother nature sung us lullaby. We’re killed by serenity. And that made the distance, fuel and energy we spent are no more important things

Tapi dengan kombinasi teduhnya saung dan hembusan angin laut, kami bisa terbuai sampai ketiduran dan masuk angin.
Menikmati itu semua, rasanya angka jarak juga biaya dan tenaga ngga lagi kepikiran.

Still on the same day, at 15:35 we headed back to Bandung via Cidaun.

Masih di hari yang sama, pukul 15:35 kami kembali ke Bandung lewat Cidaun.

After an hour ride, we pulled over at a kiosk around Naringgul, Cianjur because Nella Kharisma were exhausted after the non stop uphill ride. We chilled with a cup of coffee, surrounded by the sound of waterfall and cicadas.

The motor is cooled down, and so do our head. We’re back on the steep uphill road to Ciwidey. Unfortunately we did not have time to take pictures on one of Bandung Strider’s favorite routes. Because the atmosphere is quiet and the street lighting is sober, it’s safer if we enter the city area before dark.

Sejam berselang, kami berhenti lagi di warung sekitar Naringgul, Kabupaten Cianjur karena Nella Kharisma kelelahan menghadapi tanjakan terus menerus. Kami istirahat ditemani secangkir kopi juga suara air terjun dan tonggeret.

Setelah mesin dingin, begitu pula kepala kami. Kembali kami hadapi tanjakan menuju Ciwidey. Sayang kami ngga sempat untuk mengambil gambar di salah satu rute favorit Strider Bandung itu. Karena suasana sepi dan penerangan jalan yang seadanya, lebih aman jika kami masuk area kota sebelum benar-benar gelap.

Aaand.. It’s totally jammed as usual on weekends. At 8:00 pm, and fatigued, we took another break at some mini market and hoped the traffic would be over with the return of stamina.

Didn’t happen. The traffic jam didn’t recede since there was a bus stuck on an excavation.

Two hours later, we’re finally arrived at the nearest safe house to rest: Gunandi’s, finally we agreed to stay there. Mecca and I arrived home tomorrow afternoon.

Daaan.. Ciwidey macet seperti biasa di saat weekend. Jam 8 malam, dengan badan yang cukup lelah kami beristirahat di mini market dan berharap macetnya segera usai bersama kembalinya stamina.

Ngga terwujud. Antrian ngga semakin surut karena ada bus yang terperosok lubang galian.

2 jam kemudian, kami berada di lokasi istirahat berikutnya yang terdekat: rumah Gunandi, akhirnya kami sepakat menginap disana. Saya dan Mecca sampai di rumah besok sorenya.

After 275 km trip, we realize the differences between road tripping on a motorcycle and a car are mainly related to the senses, we can feel it completely. The air breeze, grass smell, rain cold and others. Our first beach trip on a motorcycle ended with a regret:

We should have try this earlier.

Setelah 275 km ngetrip, kami bisa simpulkan bedanya perjalanan motor dibanding mobil adalah, di atas motor kami bisa rasakan suasana sekitar dengan lebih lengkap. Semua indera bisa ngerasain. Desir angin, bau rumput, dingin hujan dan lainnya. Perjalanan 2 roda ke pantai yang perdana ini diakhiri dengan sebuah penyesalan:
