Sunday Morning Ride Lembang, the way we saw it.

In lifestyle, Random Thought

It’s true that “live to ride, ride to live” doesn’t belong to every riders. It’s an ideal point. In most cases, riders like me have another life to live on. Bills to pay, works to do, pets to feed, and a daughter’s boyfriend who annoys me every saturday night.

…wait, I don’t even have a daughter.

Nyata adanya, “Live to ride, ride to live” bukan untuk semua rider.

Eh, bentar.. Saya ga punya anak, ding

Face it, no matter how we love motorcycles, as an adult (yes, I’m just gonna assume all the striders are adults), we got a lot of responsibility waiting on the doorstep, and it’s quite frustrating. So we maintain our sanity in the best way we knew: Ride. And that’s how the weekend warriors were born.

As fun as it is, for every enthusiast a dedicated riding moment is always sacred. We possess the realization that on a motorcycle, a single failure can lead to disaster, therefore we honor this moment by prepping it thoroughly. We get enough sleep before, put on our gears and the right mindset. Some of us even seem to have more preparation on this than going on a date. Admit it.

Ngaku aja udah.

In a city surrounded by mountains, the place where I live, it’s effortless to find any twisty route. The most famous one is Lembang to Subang road. Just head up north, and after the straight past Ledeng terminal, happiness is around the corner.

Cool morning breeze, green scenery, moderate traffic and clean tarmac are simply what all of us need to ease the pain that tortures us on weekdays. And since we knew that we’re not the only one who rides…

…we met another buddies, some fellow riders, on the way or on the spot. After a warm greet from the kiosk owner, while sipping a smoky cup of coffee or tea the chat rolls, often with some good laugh.

We talked about anything, ranging from some random light topics to more personal stuffs, such as our favorite machines, and our admiration towards each other’s bike.

You just can tell the how the guys here love motorcycles in one glance. Well, how often do you see a pair of legendary MC21 and MC28 going out together?

It seems impossible to stare at all of those details without asking anything to the owner, right?

Rasanya ga mungkin hanya menatap tanpa bertanya soal detail ke pemiliknya kan?

This place is like a small piece of heaven we shared. Since when? I don’t know exactly, some former riders said this route is reputedly a favorite even from 1980’s. I personally started my morning rides from 2008, and since it is done on quite a regular basis, eventually the riders started noticing each other’s presence.

Naturally, we built a certain kind of friendship that led to interactions out of the scope of riding; connects on social media, coffee nights somewhere in the city, and some riders were even desperate enough to ask for love advices from others.

We value what this activity has brought us, and we show it by agreeing upon an unwritten code to respect. Not only towards another rider, but also everyone around. And the way to do that is by making sure each person gets to have their fun and come back home in one piece. To think about it, the idea is simple: we came to hit the road, not the roadside nor each other.

Sebenarnya, intinya sederhana: we came to hit the road, not the roadside nor each other.

And so a harmony was created. Beneath the greens, on the laid tarmac ribbons, some of us cruise…

Alone, or with companion.

Sendirian, ataupun ga ada yang nemenin. Sama aja? emang.

What started out as an individual activity began to reach other enthusiasts and eventually brought a lot of 2-wheeled machines parking in front of the kiosk around Subang tea plantation every weekend. And lately, this route become an epicentrum for 2-wheels lover.

It continues to be a fun activity, or even a zen time for some, with main goals to relieve stress, to feel refreshed, plus to get connected with our machines, our nature, other riders and everyone or everything you meet.

I almost can say it’s had a smiles of joy guarantee.

The riders get their fun and also become an attraction for other visitors, the kiosk gain their loyal customers. As long as everything goes in order, everyone is happy.

However, because life happens, some riders does not have the chance to ride as much anymore.

Kita puas riding, sekaligus jadi hiburan buat pendatang lain, pemilik kios mendapat pelanggan setianya. Selama semua berjalan tertib, semua senang.

Even when we do ride that road, we might not be able to have the same schedule as often as we want. Our interaction then moved on a considerable portion to the social media, through photographs and captions.

While it’s a common sense to share the things you love on social media, it also unintendedly invites people with their own personal agenda. And without knowing how this routine started, numerous attendees started swarming the spot and made it disorderly, if not chaotic. And we believe, We don’t even have to re-tell you how pitiful it is.

It breaks our hearts to hear many accidents happened there every weekend, which mostly happened to younger riders. Felt even worse when it also involved local residents–the roadsiders.

The worst part probably was when the authorities and local residents became jointly convinced that our sunday morning bliss is no longer a safe activity to do. Didn’t take long for them to decide to take actions. Well, to be fair, it is understandable that they can’t see which ones are playing safe, which ones are respecting the ‘rules’, and which ones are–to say it in the most delicate manner possible–looking at the rules as something awfully holy that they decide to just leave it at home, locked and useless. All riders would seem similar to non-enthusiasts.

Through posts on social media, I can see that this phenomenon had led some of the boys to decide to ride another route on their weekends. Totally understandable. We are all longing for that zen, that bliss, and if we have to switch lanes to get it then we’ll do it. But if everybody’s switching lanes, if everybody’s leaving, then there would be no one to let the newcomers know the “how to”. It’s like we’re just spreading the attraction to a new place and I guess it’s only a matter of time until similar things happen there.

Now, Shootupnride just wants to remind ourselves and our readers the very basic thing, by sending an invitation to ask ourselves: Why do I ride?

If your answer is related to the love of riding, congrats. Motorcycling has taken a big part of your maturing process, and will continue to do so. For all we know, someone who love something so dear will have the guts to cope more, to take care, and to try their best not to cause any kinds of damage. Thank you for doing that. You have contributed a huge part in making our morning rides feel preciously peaceful. Please, continue the ride. Can’t wait to hit the road together with you.

Last but not least, for dear younger riders, welcome aboard. We know motorcycling is fun and we also understand that all its thrills and risks are what makes the ride worth it.

But also remember, you only live once.
You got one life, so spend it well.
Stay riding, and be back home alive.

Sekarang, Shootupnride hanya mau mengingatkan hal paling mendasar; tanya lagi diri kita soal: Why do I ride?

Jika jawabanmu masih terkait dengan love of riding, selamat, Striders. Kami ga sabar riding bareng kalian lagi.

Terakhir, wahai rider-rider muda, selamat bergabung.

Tapi ingat, hidup cuma satu kali.
Makanya, jangan disia-siakan.
Tetep riding ya, jangan lupa pulang hidup-hidup.
