DHEY’S RIDING DIARY: MY ENCOUNTER WITH 2 STROKES, IT’S LIKE AN AFFAIR.

Looking back on my years of riding, I always realized that I’m a 4 stroker. I got 6 wheels in my garage, none of the 3 pairs need 2 kinds of lubricants to run. I live my days adapted to the force of engine brakes, therefore replacing torn wheel cushions and trembling wheel bearing are written down in my monthly spends along with groceries, internet bills and debt repayments.

It’s not that I hate smoker machines. Back in my high school days, I was curious to EVERY 2 wheeled machine in the school parking lot. I tried to borrow it for a test if possible and ride it like I stole it. Nothing went tragic so far, But the lack of riding technique knowledge, I didn’t change my riding style and accused the gliding character of 2 strokes as a flaw. It just feel plain wrong to ride it.

Memandang lagi kehidupan bermotor saya bertahun-tahun ke belakang, saya selalu sadar bahwa saya rider 4-tak. Saya punya 6 roda di garasi, dan ga satupun dari 3 pasang itu yang perlu 2 jenis oli untuk bisa berlari. Saya jalani setiap hari terbiasa dengan hempasan engine brake, karenanya memo buat mengganti karet teromol dan bearing roda yang oblak tercatat bareng daftar belanja bulanan, tagihan internet dan catatan hutang.

Bukannya saya ga suka mesin yang ngebul itu, waktu masih SMA saya malah penasaran sama semua 2 roda yang ada di parkiran sekolah. Kalau ada kesempatannya, saya coba pinjam dan “ride it like you stole it”. Selama itu sih ga ada kejadian tragis, tapi kurangnya pengetahuan saya soal teknik riding bikin saya pukul rata cara mengendarai semua motor, yang bikin saya nuduh karakter mesin 2 tak yang ‘melayang’ sebagai sebuah kekurangan. Rasanya salah aja buat bawanya.

Until one day, I met Firly through shootupnride. Hope you’re not bored to see pictures of him riding.

Sampai satu hari, saya jumpa Firly lewat Shootupnride. Btw, mudah-mudahan kalian ga bosen liat foto dia riding.

This guy had a big love of his 2 stroker that I can’t understand, though he also started his riding days as a 4 stroker.

No matter how troublesome his Tsunade (his Kawasaki KR150) is, he always managed not to change into newer bikes, Instead he bought another engine to swap his older one and remain to ride it. It tickled me. What’s so interesting about 2 strokes that made their fan did so much to keep their machine alive no matter how ridiculous their effort is?

Ga peduli gimana bermasalahnya Tsunade (Ninja R-nya), dia selalu berhasil buat ngga beli motor baru, malah beli mesin lagi buat swap mesin lamanya dan bertahan dengan dengan ngebulnya.
Ini bikin saya agak geli sekaligus penasaran. Apa sih yang menarik dari 2 tak sampai penggemarnya ngelakuin segala hal buat bikin motornya tetep hidup?

The best way to answer my curiosity is clearly: RIDE ONE, AGAIN. When I asked Firly about this idea, he gave me a smug, and later recommend to borrow the bike of his comrade in PNRB, Diki Ardiansyah (Bapet), whose also Panji’s partner in crime on riding. The picture above was taken a few years ago, for keeping good image purpose. It was the time Bapet in his glorious shape.

Cara menjawab penasaran saya tentu saja: COBAIN SENDIRI, LAGI. Saya beri tahu ide ini ke Firly, dia senyum congkak, kemudian ngasih saran buat pinjem motor temannya di PNRB, sekaligus partner in crime-nya Panji : Diki Ardiansyah (Bapet). Foto di atas diambil beberapa tahun lalu, dipasang demi kepentingan pencitraan. Itu wujud Bapet di masa jayanya.

It took pretty long time for this idea to be happened. Until weeks ago, I brought his KR150 named Blekok out, and I experienced a whole new world. The world of 2 strokes.

Perlu waktu yang cukup lama buat ide ini bisa terwujud. Sampai akhirnya beberapa waktu lalu saya bisa bawa Blekok keluar dan menemukan dunia baru. Dunia 2 tak. #tsaah.

If you asked a 4 stroker like me about the fear 2 stroke character, you’ll get the similar answer: It’s lack of engine brakes, which means no more safety net if you fail to calculate your decceleration. The bright side: You’ll know the flaw in your riding style, and a chance to correct it (if you’re not killed by it. But then again, respect your machine and it will respect you back).

Kalau kamu tanya rider 4-tak kaya saya soal rasa takut dengan karakter mesin 2-tak, jawabannya bakal mirip-mirip : hampir ga ada engine brake, yang artinya ga ada pengaman tambahan kalau gagal ngitung deselerasi. Sisi bagusnya: jadi tahu kurangnya riding style kita sebelah mana, dan kesempatan buat ngebenerinnya ( itupun kalau belum terbunuh sama motornya. But then again, respect your machine and it will respect you back).

I brought the KR150 named Blekok home for days, but since I was working in a studio by the time, I didn’t have too much time to get too intimate with it. So I didn’t waste my free time to ride. I adapt pretty quick. I realized that the KR150 have a lovely frame rigidity, which make pretty much give a precision handling to ride a little faster than I usually do. I realized I never gain 3 digits of velocity in a light city traffic for a long time lately. It just feels right to do it, unlike when I ride anything without a smoke. It assure me that I can flick or brake easily if anything comes at me, even I know the brake setup is not exceptionally special.

Saya bawa Blekok pulang untuk beberapa hari, tepi berhubung saya lagi ada job di studio waktu itu, jadinya ngga cukup waktu buat terlalu intim dengan Ninja ini. Disaat ada momennya, saya ngga sia-siakan, sebisa mungkin saya adaptasi dengan cepat. Saya nyadar KR150 rigiditas rangkanya enak, bikin input handling jadi cukup presisi sehingga tempo riding saya sedikit lebih kenceng dari biasanya. Saya sadar belakangan ini ga pernah bawa motor sampe kecepatan 3 digit dalam kota, bahkan di kondisi traffic yang kosong sekalipun, tapi bareng Blekok rasanya wajar-wajar aja. Anehnya, di atas motor 4-tak ini jarang terjadi, Blekok bisa yakinin saya buat bisa flicking dan ngerem dengan mudah kalau harus menghindari objek dengan cepat, walaupun saya tahu setup remnya ngga spesial amat.

In my free time, finally I brought it to have a more dedicated riding. As usual, when I intend to adapt faster, I pick a little rough ride to flex my muscle and read how the bike flows. I went to Maribaya route. Afterall, being months captivated in the studio room, I really need to breathe free.

Saat senggang dari kerjaan, akhirnya saya coba buat riding lebih niat. Seperti biasa saya lakukan, saat pengen adaptasi lebih singkat, saya ambil rute yang agak rusak buat ngelenturin otot dan membaca gimana flow dari motornya. Saya pilih jalur Maribaya. Lagipula, setelah kelamaan dikerem di studio, saya perlu udara segar.

In case you’re thinking that I only ride it to country roads, I’m not. I brought it on mountain roads too on a Sunday morning ride where I met our idol Panjita sporting a 150cc 2 strokers too. A pregnant one, I suppose?

Kalau kalian mikir saya cuma bawa motor ini ke jalanan kampung, ngga kok. Saya bawa juga ke jalanan berbukit buat Sunday morning ride, dimana saya ketemu Panji sang idola yang lagi perform di atas 2 tak 150cc juga. Cuma yang ini nampaknya lagi hamil.

My verdict? Well, I’m not sure if it’s because the character of PDK Gold 1855 block that made this thing rise its power since the lower rpm, so I didn’t have much problem on adapting with the powerband, I love bikes with linear power output. Pretty much torquey for a 2 stroker. It does trained my senses on higher speed, forced me to calculate better on taking lines and overtaking, timing on throttle and brakes, also on weightshifting my body on it. It offered something new, I can feel the sense of danger, yet it attracted me to play even more.

Kesimpulan saya? Hmm, saya ga yakin apa ini gara-gara karakter dari blok PDK Gold 1855 yang bikin dia tenaganya ngisi dari rpm rendah, jadi saya ngga repot menyesuaikan diri sama powerband-nya. Saya suka motor-motor yang karakter tenaganya linear. Torsinya cukup galak buat 2 tak. Dia juga ngelatih indera saya di kecepatan yang lebih tinggi, maksa saya buat berhitung lebih presisi dalam mengambil line dan menyusul, penempatan waktu bukaan gas dan rem, juga weight-shifting diatasnya. Dia nawarin sesuatu yang baru, I can feel the sense of danger, yet it attracted me to play even more.

It’s almost like an affair. Addicting. If only I can trade my neighbors for this bike.

But the most important thing is, am I do really well? I need someone to evaluate. I bring Firly for 2 ups ride, and let him judge if I’ve stepped up my game or have I ride more ridiculous than ever before. The answer: both.

Hampir kaya selingkuh. Nagih. Kalau saja saya bisa tukar tetangga saya dengan motor ini.

Tapi yang paling penting, apa saya udah lakukan ini semua dengan baik? Saya perlu pendapat orang lain buat evaluasi. Saya coba bonceng firly, biar dia yang menilai apa cara saya bawa 2 tak sudah lebih baik, atau malah lebih konyol dari sebelumnya. Jawabannya ternyata: dua-duanya.

He said that I had my precision very well, but I should not be too cocky on getting advanced. Big Ego and fast bikes are always a good recipe for disaster. Well yeah, the high rev when the SuperKIPS wide opened not only let the gasoline flow onrushing, the testosterone does as well. With this done, I think I’ve made peace with my past, and looking for more experience in my moto-living. As always, the hardest part of borrowing is to give it back, and now I hate Bapet for letting me borrow it at first. Huh.

Dia bilang cara bawa saya jadi jauh lebih presisi, tapi jangan sampai kePDan dengan perkembangannya. Big Ego and fast bikes are always a good recipe for disaster. Iya, gasingan mesin tinggi saat superKIPS terbuka ngga cuma bikin bensin mengalir deras, testosteron juga. Dengan beresnya ini, nampaknya saya udah berdamai dengan masa lalu saya, dan saatnya mencari pengalaman baru lagi soal moto-living. Seperti biasa, bagian tersulit setelah meminjam sesuatu adalah, mengembalikannya. Sekarang saya jadi sebel sama Bapet udah sempet minjemin Blekok. Huh.
